Route 66 – New Mexico to Arizona: Where to eat, what to see and what to do

One of the things you will notice when you’re driving Route 66 is how much the landscape changes.

The urban and green setting of the east will gradually melt into the stunning land formations of the west.

Route 66 – Chicago, Illinois: Where to eat, what to see and what to do

If you started your journey in Chicago, you will probably have been on the road for a week by the time you get to New Mexico.

The good news is, after Adrian in Texas, you’re already more than half way along your journey.

From New Mexico to Arizona, there is a lot of driving to be done and your daily mileage will hit a spike.

For me, it was one of the most tiring portions of the Route, but was also the most rewarding in terms of the scenery and culture.

Bargains are coming to Morrisons (Picture: Getty Images)

A lot of people got very excited about one particular Black Friday offer at Morrisons last year and they all want to know if and when it will be back.

The supermarket got especially generous in the booze aisle in 2016 and offered an enormous three-litre bottle of Jack Daniel’s for just £50.

Does being short ruin your sex life? Men tell us

That was a saving of over 50% on the Tennessee whiskey and it had people flocking to their local Morrisons in droves as it was only available in stores and not online.

Please don’t call me a ‘service user’– I’m a mental health patient

Enough with the polite jargon (Picture: Erin Aniker for Metro.co.uk)

I’m not, on the whole, the type of person who grumbles about ‘political correctness gone mad’.

In my opinion, it’s an expression that is often used to justify casual racism, sexism or homophobia – and that’s never OK.

Why I couldn’t admit to having postnatal depression – not even to myself

But I really, really hate the way mental health services insist on referring to patients like me as ‘service users’ or, worse still, ‘clients’.

I know these terms are supposed to be empowering. The theory is that the word ‘patient’ implies that… Read the full story

Meet the pop-up restaurant which only employs HIV-positive staff

We’ve come a long way in terms of understanding around HIV but there’s still a good dose of stigma attached to the condition.

Some people still believe that it’s an illness exclusive to the LGBT community and there are those who continue to insist that it’s contagious via means other than unprotected sex.

So imagine the numbers who probably think you’d be at risk from eating food prepared by an HIV positive person.

In fact, according to a survey last month, only half of participants said they’d willingly consume food made by someone with HIV.

Which is why a Canadian pop-up restaurant has set up shop to help #SmashStigma.

There are few things that can counteract the continual darkness of winter and moral unease of the 21st century.

Amidst the doom and gloom of Brexit, Donald Trump et al, we need something to remind us that there is pureness and light in the world.

So let me introduce you to this tiny baby little lion who’s learning to roar like the king of the jungle he will doubtless be.

It’s not that new but the video resurfaced on Twitter the other day and trust me, it’ll sooth even the most anxious of hearts.

He’s so smoll that he can barely walk. But that doesn’t stop him from attempting to imitate his elders with a terrifying… Read the full story

This is Alfredo Meschi.

He turned vegan three years ago, having spent the past 50 years fighting for animal rights.

Initially from a family of fishermen and hunters, he’s now using his body as a ‘permanent performance piece, a policial manifesto’ for animal liberation.

He’s inked his skin with 40,000 cross marks to signify all the animals who fall victim to our society.

And of course, the tattoos have been created with vegan ink as well as cruelty-free disinfectants and cleaning products.

The inspiration for the huge undertaking apparently came after discovering Poner el Cuerpo, Sacar la Voz, a group of Mexican artivists who use their bodies as a means of protest against their government colluding wiht narcos.

Why do you get a headache after sex?

There’s something deeply unfair about a post-sex headache.

You’re having an amazing orgasm, everything is great, everything is magical, everything is… Painful.

The second the climax is over, there’s a smacking pain between your eyes and now rather than lying in bed enjoying the post orgasmic glow, you’re hopping around trying to find some Paracetamol and a glass of water in the hope that you can shake the thing.

So why does this happen?

Well, the bad news is that experts aren’t exactly sure why it happens. Some experts claim it’s hormonal, others claim it’s a kind of stress headache.

According to the American Migraine association, there are two types of sex… Read the full story

We all know cats love nothing better than snoozing on the newspaper you’re trying to read but their laziness has apparently reached new heights.

Because many of them are really overweight and the RSCPA is recommending that cat owners start to exercise their pets in a similar way to dogs.

In fact, 10% of the 11 million cats in UK never go out unsupervised.

And like humans, fat cats have an increased risk of things like heart disease, cancer and diabetes.

A report by the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals claims that by 2019, it’s thought that overweight cats, dogs and rabbits will outnumber healthy sized pets – with half of all cats and dogs already being classed… Read the full story

If you have ever felt low after hours scrolling on Instagram, you’re not alone.

Psychologists have found an increase in suicide rates in American girls aged 13 to 18.

And researchers have attributed this link to an increased use of social media.

The authors surveyed suicide reports between 2009-15 and asked girls about their use of social media, electronic devices, print media, television and how much time they spent with friends.

Researchers also found that 36% of all teens were thinking about planning or attempting suicide in 2015, an increase of 32% since 2009.

Additionally, 87% of Year 12 girls who used social media every day were 14% more likely to… Read the full story

This secluded cabin in the Swedish forest is the ultimate wilderness escape

There’s ‘getting away from it all’ and there’s ‘really getting away from it all’.

This prefabricated micro hotel in the Swedish forest definitely falls in the latter category.

The 55 square metre cabin hotel is made by Danish bin company Vipp, who have branched out into hotels. No, we don’t understand either.

What we do understand though, is that each hotel location only has one room – and that as soon as you check in, the hotel is fully booked.

There are currently two locations – the Vipp Shelter in the Swedish forest, and the Vipp Loft in Copenhagen.

The Vipp Shelter sits next to a lake

Barbie finally gets a hijab

For years, Barbie was pretty basic.

She went around with her massive tits and tiny waist, blonde hair a-swishing and a-swoshing.

She was fun but she didn’t really relate to anyone because no human in the world could ever dream of looking like her without significant surgery.

But in recent times, she’s diversified. There’s an Ashley Graham Barbie (curvy). A Misty Copeland Barbie (athletic). Even an Ava DuVernay Barbie (black).

And now, Barbie has finally been given a hijab, inspired by American fencer and Olympic bronze medalist, Ibtihaj Muhammad.

When Mittel told Ibtihaj that they were planning to create a Barbie in her honour, she… Read the full story

What’s Christmas dinner like all around the world?

If you’ve always wondered what people eat on Christmas Day, wonder no more.

Us Brits may be fond of our cranberry, turkey and mulled wine but it’s fair to say it’s a completely different story on the other side of the world.

In Australia, a Christmas barbecue is as part of tradition as sprouts and stuffing.

Charlotte from Sydney says: ‘It is too hot here for a roast! We always have steak, sausages, chicken skewers and sweet potato as part of a traditional Aussie barbecue. It is 86 degrees Fahrenheit after all!

Have you started your Christmas shopping?

Of course you bloody haven’t, it’s only the middle of November, you have a job and a life and you’re not the kind of person who has a gift draw, a wrapping station or who keeps a spare birthday card in their bag ‘just in case’.

But, like it or not, Christmas shopping is going to have to happen at some point. So now, you’ve got options.

You can go the free-range route. You start shopping, you buy whatever, whenever, with no plan or structure and probably spending way more than you’d intended in an attempt to assuage your guilt at putting in so little… Read the full story

Someone’s made a load of Cheetos flavoured macarons

Macarons are so wonderfully sweet and delicate that they barely need any extra flavouring at all.

Let alone one of artificial cheese.

And yet, a bakery in New York has done just that – creating a range of Cheetos macarons.

The Frankenstein cakes, being sold by Macaron Parlour, are being described as ‘Cheetos infused white chocolate ganache and cheese dust,’ which sound alarming.

They’re the brainchild of  Christina Ha, the owner of Macaron Parlous who says she came up with them when she first discovered cheese powder.

She bought herself a load and didn’t know what to do with it until one Halloween, the idea for these odd creations.

Bella Atrix is a tattoo artist who is in the process of completing a massive piece of blackwork on herself.

That’s where you ply the skin with so much ink that you cover the whole area.

Bella, who is London-based, has been documenting her journey with blackwork tattoos over the past year and in July, she posted a video of her working on her thighs.

Which is when Instagram users accused her of a modern day form of blackface.

‘Not saying this is racist cause it’s not but if she goes anywhere near her face it will be,’ wrote one.

Research from an estate agency claims that if millennials just stop buying lunch, skip one night out per week and get their parents to give them several thousand quid, they’ll be able to buy houses.

Yes. Really.

According to the calculations from agents Strutt & Parker, giving up a night out once a week could save more than £6,000 a year, and cutting out takeaway meals would knock £2,640 off household spending.

Who are these people who spend £115 every time they go out? Because that’s what £6,000 a year works out as.
